Q&A: What is the best color of sunglass lens for Fly Fishing?
Question by Engineering Company: What is the best color of sunglass lens for Fly Fishing?
I am interested to buy a new pair of sunglasses or replacement for the Oakley’s I have. I know to buy polarized but there may also be a best color of lens to work with water. I heard from one source copper color.

Ultimately, it depends on the day. For cloudy, overcast days, photogrey is probably the best color. For bright, sunny days, yellow or orange is probably best. I personally prefer an amber lens for all-around performance. If you are buying an Oakly lens, my personal preference is the VR-24 lens, which is great for bright sunshine, but also has enough light-gathering quality for night driving.

I hate to be contrary here, but I think the facts will bear me out on this point. There’s a reason that the greatest majority of sunglasses are dark grays. That’s because they are best suited for bright sunlight conditions. On the other hand, amber lenses work best in low light, overcast or foggy conditions. Just be sure that your lenses are polarized to get the best visibility when trying to observe fish or fish habitat beneath the glaring surface of lake or stream. To be on the safe side, I have a pair of each. They aren’t expensive, and that way, I know I always have the right glasses for any situation. With any luck, the overcast will clear and the fog will blow off, so my ambers go back in the tackle box and I bring out my “dark” glasses. It works for me. Good luck.
I’ve had great success with Oakley’s Amber Black Iridium Polarized. It’s a great all around lens that works in Bright Sunny conditions AND in Overcast conditions. As a matter of fact, I end up wearing these as my daily wearer sunglasses because they have turned out to be so versatile.
The Oakley VR28 Polarized lens is a copper colored lens. I’m not a huge fan as I find them a bit on the dark side for overcast days.
Very overcast conditions, I’ve used Oakley’s Hi Intensity Yellow lenses – but they’re not polarized.
